Our story

Pictorial Meadows was born from a pioneering partnership between the University of Sheffield and The Green Estate CIC, bringing together research, creativity and practical application to shape a new approach to naturalistic planting. Building on the internationally recognised work of Professor Nigel Dunnett and Professor James Hitchmough, we have helped define a more sustainable, resilient and design-led vision for landscape planting. Today, Pictorial Meadows offers a complete range of naturalistic planting solutions, from bespoke seed mixes and meadow turf to plants and expert consultancy, giving clients the flexibility to choose the right solution for projects of every type and scale.

Work with us

"Originally the idea of Pictorial Meadows came about because of what I saw as a huge need in public landscapes and parks. This was 20 years ago, when beautiful flower beds and areas of rich diverse planting were just disappearing and being replaced by mowed grass and clumps of trees, but also in public landscapes where there seemed to be a real lack of diversity. So I thought why can't we do something about this in a way that's practical and to create something that is beautiful, wildlife friendly but in particular fail safe."

Professor Nigel Dunnett

As part of The Green Estate CIC, Pictorial Meadows is rooted in a wider mission to grow green and resilient urban places where people and nature can thrive. The Green Estate is a multi-award-winning social enterprise based in South Yorkshire in the UK, originally established to transform derelict land and heritage sites in Sheffield into a distinctive and sustainable landscape. That hands-on experience continues to shape our work today, giving Pictorial Meadows a practical foundation in landscape delivery as well as design and research, and connecting our planting expertise to a broader commitment to regeneration, sustainability and social impact.
